This is certainly not intended to be a defense of Kwame Kilpatrick, but I'm wondering how a man who was raised by public servants (and those who work for them) ever got the idea that HE was the charitable cause that funds from a Civic Fund should support.Sure, apples occasionally do end up a far distance from the tree. And if that's the case, I wouldn't mind seeing an honest quote from the tree. Why isn't his mother saying "I don't know why he is being accused of this behavior, this is NOT how we raised him and I find it difficult to believe that he would be capable of this."?But I doubt we will ever hear anything like this from the woman who purportedly told her son he "was chosen" to be Mayor. Yes, I'm being tough on her, but raising children is a big responsibility. Raising responsible citizens is tough enough but purposely letting your child believe that he is destined for public service and letting him believe that role is an entitlement and not a responsibility is just.....wrong.Yes, I know. My children aren't out there in the world yet. I've yet to see if the lessons I think I'm teaching them stick. I'd like to think that they will. And I'd like to think that if they don't, I'll take responsibility for not doing my parental duty and come clean about it. Feel free to check back with me in 10-15 years.
Am I the only one dying to read the rant, I mean appeal, by Kwame lawyer Daniel Hajji? I love Hajji, he is my favorite new character on the reality show Living in Metro Detroit that I'm convinced is secretly being filmed. Think about it: "Let's take, oh, about 4 million people and close most of the companies they work at and put some really dishonest, sneaky people in charge and OH! make sure there's NO good public transportation. This should be awesome to watch!"
Here's a quote (from The Detroit Free Press) from Kwame's lawyer about his inability to pay:“You can’t jail him for failing to pay restitution unless you find it is willful,” said Daniel Hajji, one of Kilpatrick’s lawyers. “But he’s making a good faith effort to pay what he owes.”BUT, if he's paying for other things (multiple cars, plastic surgery, etc.) isn't he WILLFULLY not using that money to pay his restitution? I didn't go to Law School but this seems pretty obvious to me. Any lawyers or law students care to enlighten me?Update: Apparently the Judge agrees with me! I feel so smart!
What is it about Detroit politics that turns nearly every one who gets elected into the same kind of idiot? Didn't we all think that Charles Pugh, after spending years being part of the process that unearthed and reported on the stupid things that Detroit politicos pulled, would be smart enough not to do the same things the media was purportedly aghast over? And yet the first thing I see this morning is a story that he has hired his step-mother as an aide. And am I the only one who enjoyed reading the list of what the Kilpatrick's spent their money on from October 2008 through October 2009? $2,676 on Maid Pro maid service? Do you have a maid, 'cuz I sure don't and I don't owe the city of Detroit a million dollars either! I'm also thinking that if they hadn't spent $485 on Chick-Fil-A and $303 on cheesecake and $98 at Smoothie King then they wouldn't have needed to spend $330 on a weight loss center and $145 on Beachbody fitness programs. I'm just sayin'.
I hope Roland Burris of Illinois is allowed to join the Senate today because he’s bound to cause more problems down the road and watching MSNBC – or any other news channel – is pretty cheap entertainment.
It’s not even that he is insisting that he is already a United States Senator even though he hasn’t taken the oath of office yet, it’s that he said….
"We are hoping and praying that they will not be able to deny what the Lord has ordained.”
Seriously, how much fun is this guy going to be? Wasn’t that Kwame Kilpatrick’s stand for a couple of months over the summer? God had decided that Kwame should be Mayor of Detroit and who are we to let a few felonies get in the way of what the Lord has ordained!
I hope Al Franken gets in too. Mostly because I think the Republicans aren’t trying to keep him out because he’s super liberal, but because they’re afraid that he’s going to make fun of them and they WON’T GET IT!
Bahahahahahahahahaha!
To no one’s surprise Sharon McPhail is – again – running for Mayor of Detroit. She says it’s because she wants to finish all the good work that was accomplished during the Kilpatrick administration, so I guess she doesn’t feel like the citizens of Detroit were lied to or cheated enough.
She MAY have all kinds of good intentions but it doesn’t matter because she isn’t smart enough to realize that she has said too much DUMB STUFF in public and ON THE NEWS and it’s all saved on the Internet for anyone to hunt down. (Which, of course, I did. My favorite being the interview in Aug. with Devin Scillian where she insisted that Kwame had NO intention of stepping down and that a Judge lied when he said she called him! Seriously, she called a Judge a liar on the evening news!)
And maybe I’m not wise to the way of politics but her job title until recently was General Counsel for the City of Detroit. But wasn’t she really working AGAINST the City of Detroit when she was helping the lying, cheating Mayor lie and cheat some more? Haven’t we all realized that it was in the City of Detroit’s BEST INTEREST to get him out of office and into jail?
The best part was on the news last night when she told reporter Kerry Birmingham that people are telling her that they don’t think of her as being involved in the Kilpatrick mess at all…and she didn’t even break out laughing once! (Niether did Kerry which I totally believe she deserves an Emmy for.)
The City of Detroit has already given her a polite thanks but no thanks on being the Mayor twice (1993, 2005) but I guess that maybe she thinks that now that we’ve seen her acting all Mayoral (arguing with reporters, sassing back to Judges) that people might think she’s more qualified.
What she really should do is sleep with one of her employees.
I can’t believe it’s over.
There was no use pretending to get anything done this morning as I sat glued to my television watching – first – a packed courtroom that had absolutely NOTHING going on except a bunch of people squirming and trying to act like they were NOT trying to be seen on television – then – Christine Beatty catching a minor break and not having to appear back in court until 9/11 (I would have asked for another date, myself) – and FINALLY – Kwame Kilpatrick admitting what we knew all along that HE DID IT (both physically and verbally) and resigning office and getting a sentencing date.
And as glad as I am that it’s over there is one thing I am even more glad about – that I have never pissed off Kym Worthy. She has to be the prettiest pit bull in the metro Detroit area, if not all of Michigan. In her interview after the courtroom scene she started out calmly enough, giving the typical “I’m not going to say anything” statement, but then boy did she start saying stuff! And when some stupid reporter finally asked her “Why a million dollars?” I could see her trying to decide between biting the reporter's head off and spitting it out right there in front of everyone or just putting the reporter on HER LIST.
I would have chosen having my head spewed all over a crowd of reporters then to end up on Kym’s list.
